Elko County Summer Bucket List

Elko County is a year-round playground. However, summer does not disappoint! Consider the recommendations on this Elko County summer bucket list.

Fish Ruby Lake National Wildlife Refuge

Fish for a trophy-sized largemouth bass against a stunning mountain backdrop at Ruby Lake National Wildlife Refuge. The refuge is also a very good spot for spin or fly fishing. A fishing license is required. Over 220 species of birds can be spotted at the refuge!

Hike Road’s End–Lamoille Canyon

Hike Road’s End at the top of Lamoille Canyon Scenic Byway. Road’s End functions as the main trailhead for Ruby Crest National Recreation Trail. Take short day hike of less than four miles to Dollar Lakes or an all-day hike of nearly nine miles to Liberty Lake. Be on the lookout for mountain goats and bighorn sheep that call the area home.

Kayak Wild Horse Reservoir

Paddle the clear waters of Wild Horse Reservoir. Enjoy a leisurely trip with abundant views of wildflowers and a high-desert backdrop. The reservoir is especially good for those seeking smaller crowds. Make sure to pass under the highway bridge at the northern end of the reservoir and be on the lookout for bald eagles.

Rockhound for Garnets, Quartz, and Epidote

Search for rocks and minerals in the bluffs and cliffs near Elko. Rockhounds often find jasper, copper, geodes, agate, malachite, and more. Petrified wood is also found in Hubbard Basin, Goose Creek, and Texas Spring Canyon. Very serious rockhounds can take a mining tour to private locations and abandoned mines.

Float the South Fork River

Glide down the South Fork River in a tube or raft at South Fork Canyon Recreation Area, which is different from South Fork State Recreation Area. The canyon is northwest of the dam and reservoir. Rafters will find Class I and II rapids with desert wilderness and limestone cliffs as scenery along the way. The area is managed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) with no entrance fee.
