The vast majority of land in the County (99%) is privately owned, but these three hikes nearby avoid that concern and offer pleasant spring conditions.

Rio Grande Nature Trail

Rio Grande Nature Trail is located in the Alamosa National Wildlife Refuge. The primarily flat, well marked trail covers 1.8 miles while providing exceptional views of Mt. Blanca. The refuge is known for its abundance of wildlife. Hikers may encounter a wide variety of bird species, including bald eagles and the southwestern willow flycatcher. Mule deers, porcupines, coyotes, porcupines, and elks also call the refuge home. The trailhead is located at the refuge visitors’ center. There is no fee to visit Alamosa National Wildlife Refuge. Dogs are allowed, but must be on a leash.

Penitente Canyon

Penitente Canyon is at the edge of the Rio Grande National Forest near Del Norte. While renowned for it’s rock climbing options, it is also a great spring hiking location with 17 miles of trails. Choose from Witches Canyon Trail, the Rock Garden Trail, Wagon Tracks Trail, or the Penitente Canyon Trail, or a combination via connecting routes. Visitors are treated to otherworldly views of volcanic rock formations and other interesting high-desert landscapes. Consider downloading a hiking app in advance as part of the trail is not well-marked or groomed. Pets are welcome, but need to be kept on a leash. Prepare for exposed terrain and sunshine. Day use of Penitente Canyon Special Recreation Management Area is free.

As summer approaches, the higher elevation hikes will become accessible once more. Until then, consider these spring hikes. To view land we have available in Costilla County, visit e24land.com. For specific questions, email info@e24land.com.
